Clash of Clans is one of the most downloaded mobile games of the last years. Due to its immersiveness and fun, it made to the top quickly. It was developed by Supercell and is available worldwide at the iTunes and Google Play app stores. It came a long way since the 2012 release. In this strategy game, you get to build your base and an army strong enough to defend it. Barbarians, Archers, Wizards, or baby dragons are some of the creatures featured in the game, that you can send to take enemy bases or defend yours with.

There are many strategies you can use to succeed on this battlefield called Clash of Clans. Although you can spend some real money purchasing in-game currency to upgrade your army, you still need to have a solid plan, and base buildings. Buildings and troop levels help, but that’s not all to get your army right.

So, if you’re ready to get into the excitement of battle, and to challenge yourself against a skilled player… or maybe just against your colleagues at the office, this is the definitive Clash of Clans Strategy guide you need.

You need to remember that Clash of Clans has a multitude of features. It is a social game, a strategy game, but most important - it is a patience game. Let's take a look at the tips you must keep in mind to build up your best strategy, following the teachings of the art of war.

“Know thy enemy, know thyself, and then, know the battlefield”

To get started in Clash of Clans may seem like hard work… and sure it is! So, in order to get you ready to take down the village of your work colleague, let’s focus on a few important things.

Secure your perimeter. To do this, you must be very careful in covering every little gap in your border and keeping the spawnable tiles away from the perimeter. Place your buildings inside small compartments, because in case of an attack, this will slow down enemy troops. Building multiple compartments exposes your enemies to splash damage.

“Never pick a fight you cannot win”

When you start playing, you don’t know what you don’t know, so it is far wiser to hold your horses (and hog riders) and avoid combat with other players that may seem weaker than you. Some of them are not, and raiding against them will only hurt your army and your in-game finances. And if you just don’t care and still want to raid someone else’s village, do it with a handful of goblins instead of your full army. That way, if you end up losing, you won’t be wasting countless resources.

In general, target selection in Clash of Clans has a form of a quiz - it's all about asking questions and answering them. If any answer is unsatisfying, then you should click "NEXT."

“He who wishes to fight must first count the cost”

It is a great idea to save all the gems you can. During the tutorial, you will get some for free, but you will be pushed to build some lower-level structures and use them to accelerate it. Do not do it if you don't have to. Save every gem you can get your hands on at all times.

Gems are useful to speed up progress, boosting mines and collectors, and are especially necessary as you progress in the game. You can harvest them from trees, rocks, and many other sources, but having a good amount of them will save you many problems and a lot of time.

“Plan for what is difficult while it is easy, do what is great while it is small”

Of course, we all want to get big amounts of resources after the battle, but what you have to consider are the other options to amass wealth. You should improve your gold mines, elixir pumps, dark elixir drills, or any other resource gatherer building. It is particularly important because some of those buildings can produce high amounts of said resources during shielded periods. That can be used later to upgrade your army, your village, and your defenses. The levels will more or less show how powerful your are.

During the time before the battle, prepare. Review the strategy, upgrade whatever you can (especially heroes - King, Queen, Warden, and Champion - and units). Learn your battlefield, arrange your troops, and set up your air defense. If you can, reinforce your walls against Rage Wall Breakers, and prepare your victory speech… because tonight, we dine in hell! (or at your favorite restaurant).

“There are enemies which must NOT be attacked”

Attacking other players is definitely the most fun part of the game, just remember other players believe so too, and your village maybe into their today’s menu. It is imperative that you set up a correct defensive strategy if you don’t want to end as someone else’s breakfast. Upgrade your towers and build walls when you can. If you get attacked, you will have 12 hours of peace to figure out your next steps, so don’t get drunk with revenge, and take those hours to rebuild and reinforce. Remember the part about saving your gems? Well, this is the reason you did that! Use them to speed up your new upgrades and prepare not to attack, but to get attacked again instead. You can never know if the enemy is around the corner and if you will be able to fend him off.

Do you know the moment, when farming, and you approach a village that’s not worth it to attack? Either the defenses are powerful or unfavorable (single-target Infernos against your E-Drags, Air Sweepers deep into the base, Heroes spread, etc.), or loot is underwhelming. You won't even lead your Goblin Knife to an attack. You click “NEXT.” That is exactly the point of base building. You want the potential enemy to consider your village not worth attacking. That's how you protect your house.

Also, you will discover that some villages are traps. They seem attractive, but the ultimate defeat is waiting for you. If you are uncertain, better give it a pass. Life has already verified that overeager players tend to lose quite often. Patience is required.

“Treat your men as you would your own beloved sons. And they will follow you into the deepest valley”

We already agreed that raiding other players sometimes is a lot of fun, to say the least, so let’s do it! In order to achieve a successful advance, let’s check the best way to prepare your army for war.

Upgrade everything upgradable. It is essential to treat them and to set every part of your army at its highest stats since that is the way they can yield more damage and survive stronger attacks. Reinforce walls and make sure you’re not in a builder shortage.

You need to check your finances here too. On the first levels, you may not have difficulties upgrading your army, but as you progress in the game, you will note that upgrades become more expensive, with some of them ridiculously expensive.

“Standing on the defensive indicates insufficient strength; attacking, a superabundance of strength.”

It is one of the most difficult things to manage in Clash of Clans, the balance between defense and attack. Please consider each one is very different, and you need to elaborate on an adequate strategy for the one you are taking.

When destiny puts you on the defending side, one of the first things you need to do is to prepare all your buildings, which means upgrading your Town Hall, your walls, and strengthening your air defenses. Don't expect yourself to destroy the top players with your TH9. You may want to go back, search for another target. Having a good farming system helps.

On the other hand, when the gods agree on putting you on the attacking side, you have to focus on entirely different things. You need to think about cannons, and mortars not as defenses to upgrade, but the buildings to eliminate (although Cannon and Mortar become less relevant later on). Remember, you will earn less if your Town Hall level is higher than your opponent’s, but defeating enemies with higher level rewards you with a bonus.

“We cannot enter into alliances until we are acquainted with the designs of our ”

Clans are user-created groups that allow them to compete with other Clans. Good clan is like a home.

Some of them compete for Trophies and fight to gather all the trophies they can; while others compete in Clan Wars to gain loot and XP for their clan.

When you become part of a clan, you share a private chat to meet with other members and talk about tactics. You also can challenge them, donate troops, spells, and help each other. All clans can have a maximum of 50 members and four different ranks: Member, Elder, Co-leader, and Leader.

The first thing you have to do, if you want to become a member of any clan, is repair your Clan Castle, usually in the south-west side of your village. After restoring your Clan Castle, the next step is to join an existing clan or create a new one.

To join an existing one, you have to find a clan you like and look for the status “Anyone can Join,” if you see that, you just have to tap the “join” button and that’s it! If the clan you want to join has the status “Invite only,” you still can send a request.

If you get a Clan invitation and you have enough trophies, join it. You can always leave the clan without any repercussions.

Remember, some clans have requirements to get in or to stay at. So make sure the clan you choose have similar views to yours. Also, follow their code like donations, cooperation, following orders, etc. The game is cooperation based. Your clan will most likely have its attack strategy. Follow it. If they tell you to try and get one more star in a war, go for it. It's the activity that wins and who's focused, not the skill.
