Clash of Clans Grand Warden - learn how to support your troops
As you first came to Clash of Clans, you saw a poor village threatened by the wretched Goblins. You gave those little mean, green creatures a whopping, and soon after, you were back in your village, not knowing what to do. Sure, you had your Barracks, your troops, your Spells, and the Laboratory to make it all stronger. You had the Barbarian King at Town Hall level 7, and the Archer Queen at Town Hall level 9, but still no one to guard you. That was until the Town Hall 11.
In 2015, at ClashCon SuperCell announced that there would be a new hero coming to Clash of Clans at TH11, and it will be the Grand Warden. Finally, you’ve received someone to take care of you and your troops. A hero with not one, but two abilities crafted to serve and protect. In a battle where speed, boost power, and a certain level required is needed to prevail, Clans Clash will be as competitive as it can be. Today we’re talking about this nobleman with the ultimate goal of caretaking. This is a video game immune to the pass of time. You can play it on almost every device of any quality, either if you have the language setting on Chinese or in English.
Who is the Clash of Clans Grand Warden?
A quote from Fandom wiki:
This veteran battle-scholar seeks out groups of friendly troops to fight behind and boost with his Life Aura, and assumes the form of a tower on defense. Attacking, he can walk over walls or fly high, and can make nearby troops immune to damage once his Eternal Tome ability is unlocked!
His past remains unknown. What we know is that he’s older than he looks. His hair is pink, just like the Elixir he derives his power from. He wears a robe and wields a magical staff in his right hand and a book in his left. He is a single target unit. The Grand Warden is the first hero in Clash of Clans that has two abilities. The first one, Life Aura, is a passive ability - an Area of Effect buff to all the units within its radius. It provides the max HP increase. The second ability, Eternal Tome, is unlocked after you upgrade the Grand Warden to level five. It is an active ability, which grants immunity to all troops within the Life Aura radius. Eternal Tome is a powerful ability, especially useful at the highest level of play, to counter the Giga Bomb or the Eagle Artillery, but we’ll get to that later.
These two abilities are the unique trait of the Grand Warden. He has two types of movement as well - air mode and ground mode. It is essential, because if you mess up with it, it may end badly. It’s about the traps.
If you are going for a ground attack, like Mass Hogs, Mass Miners, or P.E.K.K.A.s, you don’t want the Grand Warden to catch all the air mode traps. A high-level Black Mine can one-shot a low-level Grand Warden. Of course, now his Eternal Tome will pop and save his life, but most likely you were holding onto the ability for a different purpose. The same goes for a full air troops attack like Lava Loon or Mass E-Drag. If you watch live matches or some content videos on YouTube, you might find free tips to improve your regeneration time. If you set the Warden to the ground mode, he will trip on the Giant Mine, and after recent changes, he may pop the Eternal Tome ability in the wrong place at the wrong time. And the ability time is crucial.
Remember, for ground attacks leave Warden on the ground. Air attacks - let him fly.
What are his stats?
Preferred target - any.
Attack type - Ranged (Ground & Air).
Movement Speed - 16.
Attack speed - 1,8s.
Range - 7.
Search radius - 10.
Grand Warden Strategy
The first key part about the Grand Warden that you must understand is his movement pattern. He is a support unit, meaning that he will be wherever his help is the most needed. The Warden will follow troops with the highest health count so that his HP increase Life Aura has the highest impact. It means that he may abandon a group of units in need for the sake of another troop just because it has a higher HP count.
The next important thing is his targeting. Usually, a regular troop in Clash of Clans has attack preferences. It’ll attack the closest target if it has preference “Any”, or it will attack defenses. There are a few exceptions to this rule:
- Lava Hound will go for Air Defenses, then regular ground defenses,
- Goblins will rush for resources, with Clan Castle and Town Hall being counted as resources buildings,
- Wall Breakers will blow themselves up on Walls,
- Yeti will attack the closest target, but its Yetimites are defense-focused.
And then there is the Grand Warden, who will attack a target that’s being attacked by the strongest troops during the raid. For example, if you have a Barbarian three tiles away attacking an Elixir Collector, and the Barbarian King dealing damage to a Builder’s Hut five tiles away, the Grand Warden will clash the Builder’s Hut as well.
Adding Rage spell to the Grand Warden`s assault may be a good practice. No defense in Clash of Clans will stand tall against a bunch of invincible Hog Riders under Rage. Switch for the friendly troops you might find more useful at the moment. If you have the enemy army nearby your troops, show them what you are capable of.
Usually, you should plan the usage of Grand Warden Eternal Tome carefully to prevent the max number of troops from taking damage.

Grand Warden CoC - defense
It’s yet another unique trait of the Warden. On defense, he becomes a statue and thus - a defending building. What’s quite peculiar is that unlike his counterparts, he can use one of his defensive abilities. It’s Life Aura, the HP increase. If affects heroes and Clan Castle troops, so take it under advisement when planning your base. The defenses will not benefit much from the HP increase, so placing Grand Warden far from CC or other heroes is limiting his already mediocre defensive potential.
Since the Grand Warden becomes a building on defense, there is not much more to talk about.
Warden Walk
This strategy deserves a whole separate chapter, as it becomes more and more prevalent these days. Some say it's pure gold.
Back in the day in Clash of Clans, the top players figured out that if you take the Archer Queen and put 4-5 Healers on her with Rage (if needed), she will take a large chunk of virtually any base. It caused multiple nerfs to this strategy, like the healing cut for heroes, Healers nerfs, and anti-air buffs. Also, most of the Clash of Clans players managed to learn how to build against it. It is where the Warden Walk comes in.
The Archer Queen has a 5 tiles range. With 5 tiles range of the Healer, it makes a total of 10 range. It should work just fine against the Air Defense, which has 9 tiles range, with Healers staying outside. However, the multi-target Inferno Tower that has the same range value may become a problem. Not only does it deal damage to the Queen, but to Healers as well. Your Queen Walk can end prematurely if you lose your Healers, and at the highest level of play, it can mean a win or lose. Meanwhile, the Grand Warden can kill the Inferno Tower with Healers being untouched.
However, the biggest downside to the Warden Walk is that he has way less damage than the Queen, and clearing the buildings out takes more time. Oftentimes it’s not clearing troop that fails, but the time. Although with higher-level damage per hit increases, his overall damage per second remains underwhelming.
The Grand Warden tips
In short, during the attack, the Grand Warden will make a fine solution against externally placed heroes, as due to his range he can snipe both the Barbarian King and the Archer Queen without drawing their aggro. Although, with his underwhelming damage it might take a while, especially with the million HP Barbarian King. If you don't want to shop in the official store for any type of power-up, our recommendations are two: one, be sure to make enough hitpoints, and two, try to get additional regeneration time, but remember that an upgrade cost time of training.
Some Clash of Clans players design a troll base, bait base, or lure base (you pick the name) with a landing spot available in the middle of it for you to drop a troop there. Usually, there is a lot of traps, bombs, and otherwise unpleasant stuff, that will deal extremely high damage to your troops. For farming purposes, you can sacrifice a Goblin or two to trigger the bombs. Then you drop a tank troop - Golem, P.E.K.K.A., or a few Giants - with Goblins to follow. Then you aid them immediately with the Grand Warden and his Life Aura ability. Deploy a Rage spell onto them, and pop the Eternal Tome ability. Preferably the ability level should be as high as possible, but nevertheless, the Goblins will tear down the core before the Eternal Tome ability time runs out. However, keep in mind that it requires an ability to click fast and deploy precisely. However, now the ability active will trigger automatically when the hero is about to die. It helps a little.
Do not mix the Grand Warden and Queen Walk. Some Clash of Clans players think it might be a good idea to aid the Queen with the Grand Warden, but it’s not, and it’s for a couple of reasons:
- the Queen has a low HP count, so an HP increase doesn’t do much for her,
- she already has Healers on her, so that her HP stays near max,
- once she pops her ability, the defense will retarget onto Grand Warden,
- and the Healers will retarget onto the Grand Warden, leaving your Queen vulnerable,
- giving Life Aura to a larger number of troops gives you more HP total than just a Queen.
The only instance, where you can mix the two heroes, is when you know for sure, that your Queen will face a bunch of Balloons in CC defense, and their fall damage threatens the Queen. The thing is, that even though she uses her Cloak ability, the falling damage of Balloons still hits her. Although, wasting Eternal Tome ability for such purpose is still a waste.
You can mix the two Heroes if you’re farming, but the thing is that you don’t use troops. The whole premise of this strategy is deploying the Queen and the Grand Warden, and using their abilities to help the Queen survive as long as possible. Remember, not using any troops gives you a 100% profit on every attack like this. If you manage to snipe a Town Hall that way, that’s a bonus.

Summary - the grand warden
Heroes are a crucial part of every advanced Clash of Clans strategy. Even if you are using a so-called Sui Heroes and you simply dump them to do as much work as they can, it’s still impactful. It is why upgrading heroes and taking good care of them is so important in Clash of Clans. When you’re trying to sell the account, it’s one of the first things you will be asked about.
In Clash of Clans, Grand Warden may not seem like the most powerful hero the first time you see him. However, the higher you go with your trophies, the more you start to appreciate his attack capabilities. He’s not the biggest puncher, but with Eternal Tome ability, he can protect the big punchers long enough to clash through any base and turn it into a pile of rubble. With the addition of powerful defenses like Eagle Artillery, Giga Tesla, Giga Inferno, or Giga Bomb, this hero has gained more and more recognition among the Clash of Clans players. We will see what the future Clash of Clans updates will bring. Download the game app by checking the link, sign in, click the button shown on the screen to play and enjoy a delightful gaming experience. Share the moments you like with your friends and get thousands of views by uploading your matches!
Nonetheless, we believe that the Grand Warden with his aura will come in time to protect troops. Air and ground, hero or not, defense or offense - the Grand Warden will be the hero of everyone in need for help in Clash of Clans. When you're tired of the Home Village, please try the Builder Base or Clash Royale. We also have guides for it and we will continue adding new ones.
